Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship supports Pell-eligible undergraduate students with substantial financial assistance (up to $5,000) to study or intern abroad, plus an additional $3,000 for the study of a Critical Need Language. 

At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Gilman Scholarship applicants are supported by a partnership between the UNL Office of Global Experiences and the Office of Undergraduate Research & Fellowships. 

2025-26 Application Timelines 

Applications Due:  October 3, 2025 11:59 pm (Pacific Time)

Apply in Fall to fund study abroad during Winter 2026, Spring 2026, Summer 2026, Fall 2026, and academic year 2026-2027 abroad programs.   

Spring Application Opens: Mid-January 2026

Applications Due: March 5, 2026 11:59 pm (Pacific Time)

Apply in Spring to fund study abroad during Summer 2026, Fall 2026, academic year 2026-2027, and Spring 2027 abroad programs or internships.

Gilman applicants write 4 short essays: 

  • 2 Statement of Purpose essays (500 words each)​

  • 2 Representing America Abroad & Hometown Impact essays (500 words each)
