Below is a summary of 2023-24 outcomes from First Year Research Experience (FYRE), Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experiences (UCARE), Campuswide Undergraduate Research Events, and Fellowships.

First Year Research Experience (FYRE)
- 31 unique faculty mentored FYRE student researchers, representing 21 Departments, Schools, and/or Research Units.
- In August 2023, 56 of 61 (91.8%) FYRE applicants received a placement offer with a research mentor and project, and 47 accepted the placement.
- 42 of 47 (89.3%) FYRE students completed a full year of research activities.
- FYRE had 2.5 times as many first-generation college students as the overall first year undergraduate student population.
- 30 of 32 (93.8%) of FYRE survey respondents agreed with the statement, “Someone in my lab or research team cares about me.”
- 29 of 32 (90.6%) FYRE survey respondents agreed with the statement, “Overall, FYRE was a valuable experience for me.”
- 28 of 32 (87.5%) respondents also agreed with the statement, “This experience helped to prepare me for future jobs/careers.”
- 27 of 42 (64%) FYRE students wrote an Individual Development Plan to support professional development conversations with advisors and mentors.
- In March 2024, the 2nd annual FYRE Mini Symposium featured 22 FYRE students delivering research talks. We partnered with TRIO/Student Support Services and STEM-POWER on this event.

Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experiences (UCARE)
- 165 unique faculty mentored UCARE student researchers, representing 49 Departments, Schools, and/or Research Units.
- 144 of 149 (96.6%) of student awardees completed the Summer 2023 UCARE program, and 220 of 234 (94%) student awardees completed the Academic Year 2023-24 UCARE program.
- UCARE had 2.5 times as many U.S. nonresident and international students as the overall second through fourth year undergraduate student population.
- 121 of 125 (96.8%) of UCARE survey respondents agreed with the statement, “Someone in my lab or research team cares about me.”
- 115 of 120 (95.8%) respondents also agreed with the statement, “This experience helped to prepare me for future jobs/careers.”
- In August 2023, the Nebraska Summer Research Symposium featured 42 UCARE poster presentations. We partnered with the Office of Graduate Studies’ Summer Research Program and additional high school and undergraduate research programs on this event.
- In March 2024, Student Research Days featured 202 undergraduate poster presentations, including 145 UCARE presenters. 23 of these presenters were featured in Nebraska Today or other university websites, and 22 received poster awards from the Colleges and the University Honors Program.
- In 2023-24, 28 UCARE students received regional or national conference travel support, including 2 students in summer, and 26 in the academic year.
Campuswide Undergraduate Research Events
- In April 2024, “Research at the Capitol (Governor’s Mansion),” convened for the first time since 2019, featured 19 undergraduates presenting posters on research projects of relevance to Nebraska.
- In June 2024, the International Conference for Undergraduate Research (ICUR), which we co-hosted for the first time since 2021, featured 5 undergraduates delivering research talks to a global audience of peers and faculty. We partnered with the Center for Transformative Teaching and University Honors Program on this event.

Fellowships
- In March 2024, Sophomore Zein Saleh (Political Science, Psychology) received a two-year, $7,500 per year Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for excellence in scientific research.
- Of 18 Fulbright U.S. Student Program 2024-25 grant applicants, 12 (66.7%) placed in competition, including 6 (33.3%) Fulbright recipients. Host countries included Germany, Ireland, Japan, and Kyrgyzstan.
- Of 95 undergraduate applicants in October 2023 and March 2024, 31 (32.6%) received a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship to support study abroad. We partnered with Global Experiences to offer comprehensive support.
