Opportunity Description
Students work collaboratively to read historical legal documents, capture relevant data, and enter that data into an online interface. Our case files range from anti-slavery freedom suits to child custody disputes, medical and moral institutionalization, and criminal justice due process claims. They cover 1812-1924 and are a window into many compelling chapters of US history. To develop individual research projects, students assess their interests based on review of cases in the database and work with the mentor to design a specific research plan.

Faculty Advisor Mentoring Philosophy
As a low-income, first generation student I learned how important research opportunities with supportive mentors could be. For that reason, I work with students to meet their individual goals while also building an inclusive team environment to train researchers in digital research tools, legal and historical analysis, and collaboration. Our students have gone on to Law School and Graduate School and we include professional development mentoring in addition to technical training through the Lab.
