Student Research Days

This spring series kicks off with the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Poster Sessions, a two-day display of posters and exhibits from hundreds of disciplines. A companion event series to the Nebraska Research Days held in fall, Student Research Days also offers a week-long schedule of presentations, seminars, and a campuswide contest which spotlights the research and creative accomplishments by UNL graduate and undergraduate students. The event is typically held between late March to mid April.

Students do not have to be in the Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experiences (UCARE) program to be eligible to present a poster; all undergraduates are welcome. As the poster session and exhibitions give students a chance to communicate their work to others as well as learn about different areas of research and creative work, this event is also open to the public.

Research at the Nebraska Capitol

Beginning in 2017, the Research at the Capitol event invites select UNL undergraduate students to share their research and creative activities with Nebraska policymakers – namely the Nebraska Unicameral. With support from faculty mentors, students discuss their findings in late spring at the Nebraska Capitol (or other locations of statewide significance, such as the Nebraska Governor’s Residence and the Ferguson House). Past presenters have represented multiple undergraduate research programs at UNL, including the Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experiences (UCARE), First Year Research Experience (FYRE), Ronald E. McNair Scholars, and University Honors programs. This event is typically held in April. It is not open to the public.

Nebraska Summer Research Symposium

Like the Student Research Days poster sessions and creative exhibitions in spring, the Summer Research Symposium is an opportunity for undergraduate scholars to present their research to peers and campus community members during summertime. Held at the conclusion of UCARE’s summer term as well as the Office of Graduate Studies’ Nebraska Summer Research Program, students gather over one day to present work across transformative research topics, including health equity, quantum materials, digital legal research, and more! This event is typically held in early August and is open to the public.

International Conference for Undergraduate Research (ICUR)

The International Conference for Undergraduate Research (ICUR) aims to cultivate student growth through peer engagement in a supportive, international community tailored by undergraduate students, for undergraduate students. Student presenters can look forward to receiving constructive criticism from peers on their research and connecting at a global, two-day event without leaving the comfort of their home campus. Through a network of participating institutions that span eight countries across five continents, the best in undergraduate research is showcased at ICUR each year. UNL is one of fourteen participating institutions and joined the conference in 2020. This event is typically held between June and September, and virtual attendance may be open to family and campus community members.

FYRE Mini-Symposium

The Mini-Symposium gives all our First Year Research Experience (FYRE) students the opportunity to practice giving a research talk and experience an academic conference made just for first years. This event is held in late spring term during Student Research Days, typically between late March and mid-April. Although the Mini-Symposium is not open to the general public, FYRE students may invite up to two mentors or supporters from their research teams.
