Opportunity Description:
Granular materials are ubiquitous in both natural and engineered systems and they play critical roles in energy production and hazard mitigation. The efficient storage, transport, and mechanical processing of irregular particles, such as ground corn stalks, are essential for bioenergy utilization but are often hindered by complex flow behavior. Similarly, natural hazards like landslides and debris flows involve irregular grains whose interlocking and frictional characteristics govern large-scale mobility. Understanding the flow behavior of such irregular-shaped granular materials is very important. The objective of this research is to quantify how particle shape influences the flow behavior of irregular-shaped granular materials using a vane shear rheometer. The REU student will conduct vane shearing testing using a commercial rheometer to investigate the flow behavior of irregular-shaped 3D-printed granular particles. You will record shearing torque as a function of time, particle shape, loading condition and shearing rate. You will also experience image and data processing. If interested but not funded by the UCARE, I may still be able to hire you directly at a similar hourly rate.
Faculty Advisor Mentoring Philosophy:
I believe that effective mentoring begins with creating an inclusive and engaging environment where curiosity and confidence can grow together. My approach combines structured guidance and open discussion, so giving students a clear framework while encouraging independent thinking. Through hands-on experimentation, I will help you develop both technical skills and scientific intuition. I view research as a collaborative journey: I will work closely with you to identify your strengths and provide continuous feedback. I am also glad to help to the best of what I can for your future continued study in graduate school or finding a job in industry.
